67 - What is the purpose of dosing systems with flexible bins?

mo explains specific aspects of dosing

The dosing of bulk material with bad flow properties can be very difficult and problematic. This is particularly true for materials that are bridge building, have angles of slop greater than 45° or have strong bonding forces. Examples are talcum, pigments, regrind, cuttings, flakes or fibres.

An initial idea may be to use a material hopper with an agitator – but which is not necessarily successful for material that is bridge-building. Mechanical agitators can also damage delicate material such as fibres. There is also the significant increase in cleaning effort for material changes.

An alternative for these cases are dosing systems with a flexible material bin and external discharge aid (massage rolls or massage paddles). These dosing systems are available as either volumetric or gravimetric versions.

Simply put, the rolls massage the outside of the material bin, conveying the material down to the dosing screw. This principle makes it possible to fill the dosing screw without the agitator being in direct contact with the material. This protects delicate and difficult material. The discharge aids are powered by the dosing screw’s driving mechanism or an independent motor, via which the intensity of the vibrations of the discharge aids can be set specifically to the material.

The modular design of these dosing systems is particularly interesting in terms of their flexibility and broad spectrum of use. The material bin can be changed quickly and without tools, which is important for quick material changes, as the bin can then be cleaned separately.

The dosing screws can also be changed, which makes it possible for the operator to adapt the dosing unit to the material to be processed in a matter of minutes. Single and double screws, spirals and augers are available.
